My Final Post (Probably)

Well this is my third post this week and it is also that last week of classes. As a result I think this will be my last post, unless I get really ambitious and post once more after the final, but I think by that time my mind will be set mostly on break and not posting. Anyway last night I was able to finish my homework 5 program which takes a huge weight off my shoulders! Now all I have left to do is write and 8 page paper by tomorrow at midnight and then take 3 finals! Piece of cake right?

I asked pops on Tuesday when he is going to grade our blogs and he said today during class so hopefully he remembers because it is kind of time consuming to make three posts a week and find a cool picture for every post! hopefully it is worth the extra credit! Anyway if anyone besides me actually looked at my blog I just want to say thanks for checking it out!

Anyway I am off to our last class now! See you all around!!!

RPoTP: (2 today because it is my last post!)

Last Lab Quiz

Well the last lab quiz wasn't too bad! The first three problems were pretty easy and I think I finished them within about an hour or so after taking was to long to debug one of them. So after turning those three in I was at a 90% which isn't horrible. I then tried to do the third problem but for some reason I just had a mental blank and couldn't figure it out. As it neared the 2 hour mark on the quiz I figured I'd just try to see if I can get it to compile correctly and hopefully get some points but for some reason there was one little error that I just couldn't fix and I ended up just having to settle for a 90 on the quiz which isn't horrible but it could have been a  little better! Anyway that is how my quiz went! It feels really good to get that out of the way!

2nd to last day!

Well we only have one more day of class after today! Today we just talked more about inheritance which is a useful concept and pops says that we will be using it a lot in CS 1122 so we should be able to use it well. I am going to be honest, I am a little worried about the quiz tomorrow. I have done well on every other quiz but I was able to concentrate on just a section of concepts. This quiz is cumulative so it might prove to be slightly challenging. I'll let you all know how it went on Thursday! Anyway I am off to study for the quiz and work on my homework assignment a bit. I'll Check back in Thursday!

Sleep takes its toll...

Well unfortunately today I was feeling under the weather today, most likely due to the fact that I have not been getting much sleep this week. By the time 1:00 pm rolled around I honestly was having a hard time keeping my eyes open and I was feeling a bit sick to my stomach. I figured the smart things to do was to rest so I didn't get more ill that I already was. So because of this decisions I took the afternoon off and slept. I am feeling  much better now except for the fact that I think I just did quite poorly on a calc exam. But unfortunately I missed class today. I did hear Pop's discussed more GUI topics today so I guess I didn't miss anything too new. But I will have to do a little studying on what I missed.

RPoTP:

Final Lab

Well the lab yesterday didn't go to bad. It was only three questions but they were a little long. Me and my partner were able to finish two of them. We ended up skipping the second one because the third one had more to do with our homework assignment and we thought it would be a good idea to do that one instead. The homework by the way, looks like it is going to take  a while. I got a little start on it yesterday but I am having trouble making columns on my Sudoku grid so I am going to have to stop by the learning center to see if I can get that figured out. Anyway it is getting down to crunch time now in all my classes so I better continue with my studying. Talk to you all later!

RPoTP: (GUI's)

HW5 ..... : - /

Well pops went over hw 5 today after reviewing some listener stuff. I am quite honestly a little nervous about this assignment because gui's are new to me. I am hoping that after tomorrow's lab though I will be able to understand them a little better. The reading for today wasn't too bad. It was a lot more concept stuff rather than actual code which was kind of nice but at the same time it was rot of boring. We only have three more classes left now which seems kind of crazy, but I am really looking forward to break. But before then we have a homework assignment and also a final which might be very interesting as well. Anyway I am off to study so i'll check back in on Thursday.

Thursday and HW4

Well it is Thursday again! We don't have many Thursdays left! Last night me and my partner finished hammering out our homework assignment which is a big relief to get done! We only have one more assignment left but I feel like it will probably be the hardest out of all of them so hopefully I can get it done right and get it done on time. Pops made a mistake today in lecture!!! I know it is hard to believe right? But he wrote one of the code lab problems wrong which is why I thought it didn't make a whole lot of sense. I guess even the best of us make mistakes. Anyway I am going to try and enjoy this weekend a bit because it is probably that last semi-relaxing one I'll have before all of the studying and end of the semester homework sets in.

RPoTP:

Strings Lab

The lab on Wednesday went pretty good! I found that strings are pretty easy to deal with and they are very helpful when dealing with a set of data that isn't an integer. The only thing that is a little annoying and a problem that we ran into in lab is the fact that strings are not immutable. However, the fact that it is immutable could be useful in the future. We only have one lab left and a lab quiz though which makes me pretty happy! I do have  a lot to review for the lab quiz though so I might start studying fairly early. I can also feel that in all my classes we are getting down to crunch time because it seems like every teacher is kind of rushing to teach us the required stuff by the end of the semester.

Back At It Again!!!

Well I am back from break! It was a really nice to have a break that was free of programming and I find myself having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. But hopefully the lab tomorrow can get me jump started and ready to program again. The homework assignment that is due Friday should get me back into the programming mood as well! Today in class we covered GUI's which look kinda fun to play around with. For some reason they remind me of html code, I am not sure why but they do. Anyway i'll check back in on Thursday with an update on how I am doing.

Last class before break

Well Thanksgiving break has finally came. Today in class we caught up on some stuff that we didn't get to in Tuesday's lecture then we covered file objects and the different concepts that accompany file objects. This will officially be my last post before break. i apologize that i don't have a ton to say but m mind is quite honestly not on school anymore. i have one exam left tonight and then I am home free! Anyway i'll resume posting on my blog here in about one week! Have a great break everyone!

RPoTP:

Objects Lab

The lab went well yesterday. It was nothing to difficult. We got to the last problem and almost finished it but it still had some bugs in it by the end of class. Objects seem like they will be useful in the future, especially in larger programs. I guess I don't really have  a lot to say about this lab other than it went well and there were only 4 or 5 problems so it wasn't to bad at all. Thanksgiving break is next week so I won't post again about the next lab for 2 weeks. Have a nice break everyone!

What is a Cuil?!?

We watched this video in class today about a made up measurement called a cuil. It was quite informative and mind blowing. I suggest that anyone who wants to be enlightened, you watch the following VIDEO! Today I realized that homework 4 is out. I was kinda disappointed because I don't like to have things hanging over my head during break but maybe i'll try to get a little bit of a start on it over break. Otherwise we do have a week after break to finish it so it shouldn't be too bad. We talked about different types of methods today in java that are useful. I am trying to stay focused but it is do hard with break coming up! I'll post again thrusday.

Objects Object Objects...

We talked a lot about objects and variables today in class. It seems like we have been talking about objects and variables for quite a while but I don't think it has been that long. Either way I feel like it is getting kinda repetitive  I guess we will find out next week though in the objects lab, if I have actually been learning anything. The video at the beginning of class today was pretty good today! It was a video of a bunch of trucks that thought they had a low enough clearance to go under a bridge but unfortunately they did not. If I haven't said it already, I really do enjoy the videos at the beginning of each class each day. They serve as nice comic relief and allow us to take a break from our busy school days.

RPoTP:

100% on lab quiz!

Well I am happy to report that I got 100% on the lab quiz! I am not going to lie I was quite worried going into the quiz but once I got working on the code I found that I know the material just fine! All that worry for nothing! Overall I took about an hour and twenty minutes to complete the quiz. I probably would have finished in about an hour but it took me a while to debug the second program, or maybe it was the third program. Either way in one of the programs I was using a 0 instead of a -1 and it took me way to long to figure that out. But I am happy anyhow that i did well! :D

The next lab quiz

Well I am going to be honest, I am a little nervous for this next lab quiz. The chapters of the book that this next quiz is covering are definitely more complicated that the chapters on the first lab quiz. As a result I think some studying is in order tonight. As for the lecture today, most of it made sense and I felt a little better about sections 7-9 of chapter 8 after the lecture. I just want to get this next quiz done with though because after it is over then I believe we do not have anything left to do until after break. Unless of course he surprises us with a homework assignment over break, which would be quite unfortunate. Anyway i'll let you all know on Thursday how my quiz goes, that is if anyone actually reads this blog. ;-)

RPoTP: (Well it was November 5th yesterday. I actually haven't seen this movie but I'll post the picture anyway.)

Cats are the internet?!?!???

The video at the beginning of class today was completely pointless and just all around weird. The speakers must not have liked the video either because after finishing playing the internet cay video they decided not to work for the rest of class. Yesterday I started and fro the most part finished my homework program which feels really good! Today I just need to run a few more tests on it and then it will be good to submit. The lecture today wasn't too bad it was just reviewing some fundamental things about variables and objects which was pretty good review. Time to go test my code and submit it, chat with you all later!

RPoTP:

Lab

Lab went pretty good yesterday! We did 2D arrays and I feel like they went pretty good! We finished all of the problems except for the last problem. I enjoy doing labs because usually going into labs I don't feel 100% confident in the concept but coming out of the lab i feel quite a bit more confident. We have the lab the quiz next week which I feel like will be a bit harder than the first one and I may have to do a little studying this weekend to make sure that I am decently prepared for the quiz. I guess we will just have to see how I do next week!

Another Tuesday

Well we learned about constructors today in class but it is not the constructors that worry me, instead it is the hash map assignment. I haven't had a chance to start the homework but it looks pretty long and I should probably start it soon. I think I will try to start tonight but if not I'll for sure start it on wed. Back to constructors though after listening to the lecture constructors make a lot more sense which is a plus because I came into the lecture not quite understanding the lectures. Well I am off to study for an exam and then hopefully later on I can start my program.

Bake me.....a Cake! Bake me .... a cake!

So Lecture today was interesting especially because it started out with a very pointless video of a Mario character saying "Bake me ..... a Cake!" over and over again. Even though it was pointless it was pretty entertaining as well. I guess that shows how easily amused college kids are. During lecture however we started out be going over what to do in HW3 which I found pretty helpful. I am just hoping that when I start the program, all of my understanding doesn't fall apart. We then went on to talk about objects which are pretty interesting as well and could be quite useful in the future. I feel like I have a general understanding of objects but I need to practice using them a bit first before I feel 100% confident with them.

RPotP: Objects....

Da LAB!!!

Well the lab wasn't too bad this week. It was all about hash maps which I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on. We didn't get through all of the problems because we spent a little more time than we probably should have stuck on one of the problems but all in all the lab went well! The third homework assignment is out now as well which is going to make my life a little more busy. However after reading through the assignment I feel like this one will be a little more straight forward than the other homework assignments that we have had, but I guess only time can tell!

Internet is soooooo SLLLOOOOOOWWWWW! :-(

So today when we tried to watch the beginning of class video the ..................... buffer............... buffer............... buffer................... didn't work because ........... buffer............ buffer........................................ buffer............... buffer......... the freaking internet is soooooo SSLLLLLLLOOOOO ....... buffer ..............buffer ........ WWWWWWW today!! On a lighter note, we covered multidimensional arrays today. They seem pretty straight forward and I did a little brushing up in the book before class today which I think helped me understand the lecture more fully. I think I will start making this a habit in the future. Overall multidimensional arrays seem to be something that I can use to be quite helpful in the future! Tomorrow in lab we will be doing hash maps which don't seem too difficult but i'll let you all know on Thursday how I do.

Another Thursday

Well its the last lecture of the week. It seems like I have done a ton of programming this week. I have not only been programming in java but in my engineering classes I have been programming in MatLab. The two are decently similar which is nice because I can apply my CS1121 knowledge to MatLab making it really easy to complete assignments  Today we learned more about hash maps which still seem pretty strait forward and I feel like they well be useful in the future. Well tomorrow is finally Friday which is the end to another busy week. Talk to you all next Tuesday!

RPotP:

Array Lists are Da BOMB!!!

So after doing the lab I feel like I have  a much greater understanding of array lists and I found that I really am not a fan of the fact that we could not use array lists on the homework assignment. It would have been so much easier to make that fit program if we had been able to use array lists. Me and my partner finally finished the second homework assignment as well after spending about an hour and a half trying to debug it. We eventually found out that we were missing a +1 in one spot that was throwing off our whole program. I guess that is programming for you!

HW2

Well me and my partner started working on the second homework problem yesterday and we found that it is slightly challenging. We will be going to the learning center tonight to hopefully finish the program though as we have a pretty good start on it. Hash maps also seem a little confusing and I am hoping that today in lecture Pops can help clear it up a bit. This weekend I am going to be pretty busy so it would be nice if I can get everything that us due this week done before friady!

Forgot...Ouch!

Well today is Thursday which means that a reading response and code lab were due this morning. I am usually really on top of all my CS stuff but somehow I let both the code lab and the reading response slide today. I think it is safe to say that this week has been my busiest one yet this year due to the fact that I have 2 exams and a 4 - 5 page research paper to complete. I must have some how forgot to do my CS stuff because of how busy I was. I must be losing my edge.... better sharpen up here. On the plus side of things, I have this blog which should give me the extra credit I need to make up for these missed assignments. Pops, if you are reading this, one thing that I would really find helpful is if you put our assignments up on canvas. Even if you made and account just to do this and the assignments would just pop up as reminders for all of us, that would be very helpful!

RPotP: (My brain feels kinda like this right now.)

The Lab...

Well the lab was interesting... I found out that I did not know as much about arrays as I thought I did and as a result the first few problems of the lab were a little rough. The nice part is that I came out of the lab feeling like I knew a lot more about arrays than I did when I went into the lab. I still have some catching up to do this weekend but I feel a lot better about arrays after the lab. The first two problems probably took a combined time of about an hour but after I got into the swing of things I figured out how arrays worked and was able to understand and solve the next problems.

RPotP: (I never realized that a mastodon was basically a mammoth.)

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Well the programming is getting a little more difficult. I have been getting a little behind due to the amount of work that I have had in other classes but I am hoping I will be able to make sense of everything in the lab tomorrow. If not I should have time this weekend to get caught up. The new HW assignment that we have coming up seems to be kinda difficult but at the same time the test part of the assignment seems pretty fun due to that fact that it is a competition to break each other's tests. Pops is going to start lecturing now so I got to go! I will post again on Thursday!

Arrayz todayz

We are learning about arrays today which seem to be able to make some aspects of code a lot easier to wok with. The video at the beginning of class was really awesome though because it was one guy who sang 4 different parts of a star wars tribute song! Although that arrays seem a little more complicated I think I will be able to make sense of them with a little practice and be able to easily implement them into my code. Also I should mention that we started leaning matlab in ENG 1101 today and I find it pretty easy to lean due to the java background that I have learned in CS1121.

RPotP:

1st Quiz

Yesterday we had our first lab quiz. I think it went pretty well! I got full points for each problem which was good but the last two took me a little longer than I expected. I after a little debugging and re ordering of commands, I was able to get the both done. Overall it took me about an 1:45 to finish which isn't that bad for my first quiz I guess. It is kind of a relief that I got that over with thought because now I can just relax a bit until the next quiz comes about.

Back at it again

Back to class today after having a week off. Today we went over overloading methods which make sense, and before that pops went over scopes for quite a bit which was not necessarily needed but I guess it is a good review.  Tomorrow we have our first quiz which should be interesting. I feel like I am ready for the quiz but I am just hoping that there are no problems that are too difficult. After class today i'll be going to the career fair to get a feel of what it is like. After that I might do a little studying for the quiz. Wish me luck for the quiz tomorrow!

NO CLASS!!!

We didn't have class on Thursday which was nice but, I still spent quite a bit of time on coding. I had been working on my HW1 assignment here and there throughout the week and I took the time that I would normally spend in class, to finish my assignment up! After working out a few bugs here and there I got a program that works wonderfully! Every scenario that I tested worked so hopefully I am able to get full credit on the assignment. It is amazing how such a little problem can take so much of your time to do! I think I spent a total of 5 hours on the program. The first 2 hours however were not very productive due to my lack of understanding for the problem, but then it finally clicked and after putting in a few more hours my program was finally done!  Anyway that is enough programming for this week. I'll check back in on Tuesday!

RPoTP:

Labs = more challenging

The labs are getting a little more challenging now. Or actually maybe I should say more complicated. Most of the problems are still pretty strait forward but they take longer to do due to their complexity. In Tuesday's lab me and my partner only made it through 4 or 5 problems. I am starting to make some head way on Homework problem number 1 as well. Slowly but surely I am piecing the different parts together, and hopefully i'll soon be able to finish it up! Also there is no class on Thursday which is a major plus! It is always nice to have  a break from a class! Well off to do some more homework...

Homework 1 ...... :-(

Over the weekend I started working on homework problem number 1. HW1 SUCKS!!!!! I have been working on it for probably a total of 4 hours and I have gotten almost no where. I spent 2 and a half of those 4 hours in the learning center, and even though they are usually helpful, they proved not to be very helpful at all. In fact they themselves could not really figure out the answer without using higher levels of programming. This is the first time that I have been really frustrated in programming. Hopefully I can find some more help somewhere and get it done by Friday.

Stress Test

I am starting to feel the work load of this class. I couldn't do a whole lot of programming the past few days due to an overload of homework in other classes. This weekend I have some catching up to do. Hopefully the new concepts will be pretty straight forward and I'll be able to get through the code lab and reading fast. Then I should probably get started on the first homework assignment we have as well. It is so hard to do homework on the weekends but I guess I should suck it up and get going. 1 for the money... 2 for the show... 3 to get ready... and 4 to GO!!!!

Code Labratory

So code lab yesterday was pretty awesome except for the last problem, number 28 which was quite mind blowing. I didn't get quite all the way through it but the problem but I want to go back in finish it just for the satisfaction of completing a difficult problem. One thing that I find very distracting when doing homework is "How I met your mother." They are such short episodes and you think "oh it's ok i'll have time to watch one episode it's only twenty minutes." Then 4 minutes later your like "oh &#$% I need to do my homework!" Anyway we are starting our lecture again today so hopefully it is a good one!

Class # ?

I finished my code lab later last night. All the questions were simple enough and I got two of the programs on my own. For the last two though I had to make a late trip to the CS learning center at 8:30 last night to fine tune but after about a half hour all my programs were correct. If you haven't used the learning center yet and you have a question about programming I highly suggest you take advantage of the learning center! Pops had a little trouble today getting his computer connected to the projector which took up the first five minutes of class meaning we didn't watch our video. =( I always find it ironic when someone like Pops who is very technologically oriented, can't figure out what is wrong with a piece of technology. I guess sometimes technology doesn't want to work even for the best of us! Anyway that is it for today and it is now time for the RPotP (Random picture of the post).

Blooleans and Such

Class on Thursday was fairly informative. I had been a little unclear on the boolean statements as well as switch statements but after the lecture I felt pretty good about them. It may also have helped that I spent some time in the learning center the night before figuring everything out. I got absolutely slammed with homework this weekend so I probably won't get to my next code lab and reading until Monday but the reading is slightly shorter this time so hopefully the homework will go fast! Until Monday, when i'll post about my code lab, I should probably get going on my other homework. Good luck to everyone of their homework and i'll see you all Tuesday!

P.S. I am going to start a "Random picture of the post" so whenever I post i'll attach a random picture! Here is today's picture!

First Pair Programming

We had out first pair programming lab today! I found out that I really enjoy programming! I went into the lab kinda knowing the basics of java but after 2 hours of programming I feel like a built an extremely strong base that I will be able to use to explore the vast language of java. Also I have found that the CS learning center is really helpful. When you are stuck on a code lab problem they do a great job of  explaining what your issue is and then they help you work through the rest of the problem until you have the correct answer. Overall Java programming is going good and I am really enjoying it!

First Offical Day of This Blog.

I will be turning in my url for my blog today in class! Hopefully some people will start to come and see this blog! Today Dr. Pops showed one of my favorite scenes from The Space Odyessy . The first code lab was kinda difficult due to that fact that I didn't quite get the concept of of the read vs prompting a user. I was trying to put in actual variables which code lab obviously did not like. It was very nice that Dr. Pops explained this concept in class. Also the one other thing that I found slightly difficult to comprehend in the reading is the multiple types of variables and when to use these variables. After the lecture to day though, I felt much more confident on the types of variables and when they are used. We are getting a lot of information thrown at us but I feel with a little more practice we will end up being pretty darn good at program.

First Post 2 days in!

So far I have had 2 classes of cs1121! I am enjoying the class very much and also loving the concept of programming. The First day of class was really hot but the second day was a little cooler. I enjoy seeing random clips of the 2001 space odyssey in class. I am not sure if it is going to be a regular thing but so far Poplawski has managed to sneak in a little clip each day whether he meant to or not. As far as the programming goes we are starting off really basic which is fine since I have very little programming experience with java. I have noticed that a few concepts are carrying over from my novice experience with python. All in all the class is going good and I am looking forward to next Tuesday!
